It is pretty hard to place one car in only one category and similar situation is with compact SUV’s. Popularity of compact is increasing while the popularity of large SUV’s is decreasing and we will deliver information’s about 2016 Honda CR-V, 2016 GMC Terrain, 2016 Mazda CX-5, 2016 Ford Escape and 2016 Nissan Rogue.
There are many vehicles in this segment and we had to think a lot about which of these to include to the list because competition is fierce. When we say that models like Subaru Forester, Buick Encore, Kia Sportage, Volkswagen Tiguan, Jeep Cherokee, Chevrolet Equinox are not on the list it is quite obvious how many great models we have on the market.
2016 Honda CR-V
With great number of standard features the 2016 Honda CR-V was able to attract large number of customers and to become one of the bestselling models on the U.S. market. In interior it comes with decent amount of space that can accommodate five adults in pretty much perfect comfort. We are sure that many might would think that 2.4 liter inline four cylinder engine with 185hp is not enough for this vehicle but when you test drive it you will be persuaded that it is quite adequate. With fuel economy of 27/34 mpg city/highway availability of optional AWD and starting price of $23,320 this is our first choice on the compact SUV segment.
2016 GMC Terrain
One of the problems and complaints that many had about the 2016 GMC Terrain and previous models was about the four cylinder engine that offers 182 hp which is not good enough for the vehicle of this size. This unit can be sluggish on highway and when you need to accelerated faster but it is solved with impressive V6 unit that offers 301 hp. Ride quality is quite good and six speed automatic will change gears quite fast and is able to always choose the optimal rev range while everything is done seamlessly. What we do not like with Terrain is that handling is not so great and that there is a decent amount of body lean in corners while the steering gives almost no feedback.
2016 Mazda CX-5
For most drivers the 2.0 liter inline four cylinder with 155 hp in the 2016 Mazda CX-5 is not enough but you can choose the more powerful 2.5 liter four cylinder unit with 184 hp. This is a slightly smaller vehicle than the previous two so it can return pretty good performances even with smaller engine and lower power output. Power is transferred through a six speed manual transmission as a standard while the six speed automatic is also available. Among the benefits from this car we can mention great handling, good brakes and good ride quality.
2016 Ford Escape
We could hear many praises for the engine lineup of the 2016 Ford Escape that include two small EcoBoost turbocharged gasoline engines and one naturally aspirate unit. All those units provide enough power and smallest 1.6 EcoBoost pumps out 178 hp and the most powerful option is the 2.0 liter EcoBoost powerplant with 231 hp while as a base we have the naturally aspirated 2.5 liter unit with 168 hp. Without a doubt handling and good steering takes it to one of the top spots in the segment.
2016 Nissan Rogue
When it comes to the 2016 Nissan Rogue it will bring fuel economy that is quite good and pretty much one of the best choices with 26/33 mpg. When we add the fact that there is a lot of cargo space and nice looking interior we have one of the best models on the market. Among the things that we did not like is the powertrain. The 2.5 liter inline four cylinder engine is paired with automatic transmission, CVT, and it will often return unrefined sound and become loud especially when you want to accelerate and use the gull 170 hp that this engine produces.
