We do know that the 2015 Volkswagen Golf R is one great hot hatch but what we did not know is that it will be also offered for the U.S. market. This was officially announced at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show where the U.S. specs model was presented.
According to the sources in the company it is official. Seventh generation model will be offered to the U.S. market in the first quarter of 2015th. This means that it will be available about six months after standard Golf and sport GTI version are delivered to dealers.
2015 Volkswagen Golf R Release Date
Just like with every performance oriented hatchback the most important part of this one is the engine. We are getting well known 2.0 liter inline for cylinder turbocharged unit that in this version pumps out great 290 hp and 280 pound feet of torque. Compared to currently available Golf R this is increase of 34 hp which will be noticeable on track.
Power is sent to all wheels through a 4Motion system that is again standard for these vehicles. This setup allows transmission of 100 percent power to the rear wheels when needed. To further improve handling and drive characteristics we are getting new sport suspension, stability control system that can be deactivated, speed sensitive steering and more.
Acceleration from 0 to 62 mph is done in 4.9 seconds when the engine is paired with dual clutch DSG transmission and in case when the manual transmission is added this car accelerates to 62 mph in about 5.3 seconds. Even we are getting more power from the engine fuel economy has been improved. Currently available mode offers 28 mpg while the manual equipped 2015 Volkswagen Golf R will return 33 mpg on the European drive cycle.
To keep everything under control and to provide better grip we are getting XDS or cross differential lock at front and rear axles. This system will apply brake pressure to the inside wheel to provide more traction when car is cornering. As a result we will be getting a lot less understeer when going through fast corners.
For those that are looking for even more and even better performances there will be the DCC or dynamic chassis control system that will bring the Race mode. When you choose this setting engine response is different, shift points are more performance oriented, suspension is stiffer and similar. There are also Normal, Comfort and Sport modes.
As a standard we are getting 18 inch Cadiz alloy wheels that are delivered with 225/40 tires. This amount of power needs a lot of stopping power and this segment brings the 12.2 inches vented steel discs to the back and 13.4 inches to the front. Brake calipers with R logo are mounted to each corner and you can be sure that it will offer great stopping power. Additional details that pronounce the power and performances of this model include bi Xenon headlights, R badges, chrome exhaust tips and full body kit.
Interior is also equipped with high level of technology providing comfort to driver and passengers. Dashboard is refined with faux carbon accents and additional R badges while we are getting sporty steering wheel. Central console is dominated by large 5.8 inch touchscreen that goes to input mode whenever someone moves finger near its surface.
