According to reports there will be no major changes for the 2015 Mazda CX-5. Biggest difference might be the delivery of diesel engine that should attract more buyers. Similar was with the 2014th model when we were getting more powerful gasoline engines.
Even with the delivery of more powerful engines fuel economy was barely affected and this car managed to stay on pretty much the same level. Lack of power was one of the major problems and most complaints were delivered regarding this. We know that diesel will not be a champion in performances but it will significantly improve fuel economy which has become the most important factor when buying new vehicle on the U.S. market.
Changes For 2015 CX-5
The 2.0 liter Skyactiv four cylinder engine is currently available only on base Sport model but the Touring and Grand Touring models will be available with proven 2.5 liter engine that delivers 184 hp and 185 pound feet of torque. There are no significant differences in fuel consumption but the power increase can be noticed easily. With slightly more power it will be able for Mazda to attract larger number of buyers to its brand.
The 155 hp and 150 lb-ft of torque that is delivered from 2.0 liter engine is enough for acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in about 9.7 seconds. Power is transferred through a six speed manual transmission while the six speed automatic is optional. At this moment acceleration time for 2.5 liters model are not offered but we do expect to see about 9 seconds or similar which is a slight improvement over the base version but still it is an improvement.
Interior remains almost unchanged, few tweaks and slight improvements are noticeable here but we are not getting anything revolutionary. Touchscreen that is used to control all infotainment systems and other car systems is not the class leading but still offers pretty intuitive and simple controls. This is one of the things that will be most likely upgraded in the next few years so that the CX-5 comes even more competitive on the market.
We did not receive specs for the diesel version but there is a good chance that the 2015 Mazda CX-5 will receive same 2.2 liter diesel units we were able to see in Mazda 6 sedan. If this happens we might be getting two versions the 148 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque and 173 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque depending on the state of tuning.
With lower compression ratio of 14.0:1 it was possible for this car maker to use more aluminum and lighter materials that as a result have the lower weight of the unit and entire vehicle. When this engine was tested in Mazda 6 we noticed immediately that it is refined and at normal cruising speeds it is quiet, similar to gasoline unit. This is also thankfully to the six speed manual transmission that we will be getting in CX-5 also.
2015 Mazda CX-5 Release Date
Since the 2015 Mazda CX-5 comes with no significant changes there are no reasons for delays in the launch. As a most likely release date we could hear mid of 2014th and we do expect this to be the truth.
